Preseason #12 Hofstra University knocked off consensus #1 University of Minnesota 18-17 over the weekend, in spite of an expected win by fall by UM defending Division I NCAA Champion Cole Konrad. This was a great feat, considering Hofstra's longtime successful coach, Tom Ryan, left after last season to take the head coaching job at Ohio State. New Hofstra coach Tom Shifflett, former 3-X D-L All-American from Edinboro University, was expected to have an uphill battle this year, as Ryan was very popular and left suddenly. Inheriting a program in that situation is usually the kiss of death, but this win over Big Ten giant UM is HUGE in the college wrestling world. Hofstra University is located on Long Island, NY, about 25 miles east of NYC. It has an undergrad enrollment of about 13,000.
Also, Olympic Gold Medalist and 4 time NCAA D-I Champion Cael Sanderson made his Hilton Colliseum coaching debut on Sunday by shutting out a very good Arizona State Team. In the Iowa State lineup was Cyler Sanderson, his freshman brother. Cael took over from legend Bobby Douglas, his college coach.
So before this had you ever even heard of Hofstra University?
Of course I'm interesting in Cael Sanderson. Hopefully for Iowa State, he's as good of a coach as he is a wrestler. I didn't know about the younger brother. That will be interesting.
Moving to Cafe...

Hofstra? Of course. I just added that 'fun fact' for the benefit of those who had not.
I went back and forth on where to start that thread. Just keeping you on your toes. (Chin down, lateral movement, yadda yadda...:)
It was my first moved thread.....so how'd I do?
I remembered to keep my chin tucked, but I think I was standing pretty flat-footed.

BOO PULLS HUGE UPSET!
Successfully moves thread and graduates from neophyte to veteran moderator!
Reached at his home office in Iowa's Quad Cities, a jubilant Boo stated in an interview:
"I worked hard for this. I've been scouring this forum for weeks looking for someone to screw up. duran created the opening, and my training kicked in. duran is a formidable opponent, but it was my day today. I want to thank my training partners and my conditioning coach, Billy Rush. Thanks to Xyience, Warrior Wear, and Gamma-O for their sponsorship. I think I deserve a shot at the title, fairly squarely."
:pound: First thread I opened after work. Laughing was a great way to start my evening after a long hectic day.
Thx duran.
I heard/read a while back that Cael's little brother is supposed to better than Cael. That's really saying someting. Does anyone know his record as of this time???

Ok I will ask then....
Why don't some of you all knowing wrestler types help build the training/tutorial section with all your knowledge.
Wrestling is my weakest part in the "M" portion of MMA.....

DanO: Cyler, the youngest of the Sandersons, is a freshman at Iowa State, wrestling for his brother Cael, the head coach. Cyler has at least 5 losses this year, including a loss to the #1 ranked guy in his weight. Cyler was also PINNED by Josh Churella of the University of Michigan in the National Dual Meet Championship earlier this month in Cedar Falls, IA. I saw a clip of the pin. He tried (sloppily) a high risk move and that was all she wrote... He had lost earlier this season to Churella by a score of 6-4. Cyler is ranked 19th in the nation in Divistion I at 149 pounds in the Jan 12th issue of WIN (Wrestling Indternational Newsmagazine), a great print publication I subscribe to. I predict him to be All-American this year (top 8 in the National Tournament held in March). Cael was other-worldly. Not likely there will be another one like him ever.
Yeah, here in Iowa Cael is spoke of with near reverence.
I would have to agree with Easye on this one guys. I have my hands full, help me out with this section.
Hey, thanks Duran. I guess the high hopes for Cyler have met with some resistance. Maybe all these guys are taking out Cael's success on poor Cyler.
Yea, Boo, I heard that when people say the name Cael Sanderson, you must bowed, looking at the ground.
Easye, I'm glad you asked, BUT I guess I shouldn't be the one to ask. It sure looks like Duran and Boo are VERY knowledgable on Collegiate Wrestling.
Becasue Wrestling seems to be such a good base for MMA, I agree with you on a wrestling tutorial on Collegiate wrestling and maybe what the differences are in Greco Roman Olympic wrestling.

Re: opponents taking it out on Cyler - that's sort of like how it was in boxing in the 80's when Marvelous Marvin Hagler's brother, Robbie Sims, would meet guys who would fight the fight of their lives against him. They figured it would gain them notoriety that they beat Hagler's brother.
Greco-Roman is all upper body wrestling. You can't shoot in on the legs. You have to have a lot of overall body strength/power, as you are always standing and driving against your opponent. Great balance is a must. Without it, you get tossed off your feet. The U.S. Army wrestling team is big on Greco. Randy Couture's best style was Greco (he is an Army vet), as was Olympic Gold and Bronze medalist Rulon Gardner. Greco Roman can be boring to watch, even for a hard core wrestling fan like me.
