View Full Version : Captain America Gets Title Change Due to World Sensitivities

These are challenging times for America.
And challenging times call for heroes. Like Captain America.
But because these are also sensitive times, even heroes need to change their names.
Thus, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger is undergoing a title change when it rolls out in Russia, Ukraine and South Korea this summer, where it will be called simply The First Avenger.
LA Times’ Hero Complex got the scoop Friday, which said execs at Marvel and Paramount, which is distributing the movie, were “pleasanty surprised” the list of territories wasn’t larger.
While once America was a clear hero in the movies ("The Americans have a plan" line is just awesome if you watch Independence Day in other parts of the world), the past decade has been a little rough on flag-waving movies. Captain America joins other Hollywood movies that have been altered to smooth over political differences.
When Paramount made their 2009 G.I. Joe movie, the monicker “A Real American Hero” was discarded in favor of “The Rise of Cobra.”
And when Warner Bros. made Superman Returns, the line “Truth, Justice and the American Way” was changed to “truth, justice, all that stuff.”
In sensitive times, it seems like people may still love Hollywood, they may not want to be reminded that Hollywood is in America.

now we can see the level of stupidity of this Hollywood people today...this the reason why some others doesn't want hollywood to handle the comic adoptation movies.
They (Marvel) choosed wrong director (with his staff) to direct this film.

And, hence, I will not be viewing this movie.

I don't see what's stupid about this. In some markets, "Captain America" will be called "The First Avenger".
Some countries around the world have more negative feelings towards America than positive. This seems like a rational business decision to rename the movie to appeal to certain foreign demographics. That's just how the movie business works.
Honestly, do you think the movie "Pearl Harbor (2001)" was marketed in Japan the same way it was in America?
On a related note, here's a 2010 BBC poll on general attitudes towards countries: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
Interesting to note, prior to 2010, most countries had mostly negative feelings towards the United States, even Canada. Sentiment towards the USA seems to have hit a low around 2007, and began an uptick in 2008.
For reference, Germany was the most positively viewed country around the world, Canada was second. The USA was somewhere near the middle.

You know, the "Under God" part of the pledge of allegiance was only added in 1954?

Well changing the title of the film won't CHANGED anything...ppl in other country will be still had an Ill Will and Hatred towards U.S. and to the americans, and viewers will still know that was Capt America even if they changed the title of the movie...that's the reason why i said it's so stupid and very hypocritical.
I think this will gather a lot more damage to the film.

I disagree. Will you or anyone you know avoid watching "Captain America", just because it's been renamed in a foreign market?
On the foreign markets, I think it might make a difference between watching and not watching. Suppose you are a child in a foreign household with vaguely negative feelings towards America:
"Mom/Dad, can I have $5 to go see Captain America?"
"Mom/Dad, can I have $5 to go see The First Avenger?"
I also don't see what's hypocritical about it. It's just business.

Ah, yes, they hate us but they suckle off the Great Satan's teat with abandon. I could give a rat's ass what people in other countries think about the U.S., but Canadian attitudes make me sick. Canada has been tugging on our coattails for many a decade. Likewise, there are many countries who would be speaking German, right about now, had it not been for our arms, money, and men.
So, to the World I say, "shut the hell up and read some history. At some point, you have or are benefiting from this GREAT COUNTRY. Kiss my ass, and good night."

If you talking about business perspective? this is bad and will me or anyone avoid watching this hollywood version of Capt America?
Well, FYI Die Hard Marvel fans are planning to boycott this movie (getting a Canadian actor was already bad enough to them).

And we would be speaking the Queen's English if the French, Spanish, and Dutch had not helped us during the Revolutionary War. By your reasoning, we should be up in arms any time a movie from those countries has a title change when they market it here in the US. God help us, if they hadn't helped we would all be watching "The Colour Of Money", "Journey To The Centre Of The Earth", or "Aeroplane".
If I remember correctly, in other threads you were aggressively pro-business when it comes to taxes and laws. Why does it bother you when a company, whose sole purpose is to make money, makes a decision to drop two words from a movie title in three specific foreign markets so that they may increase profits?

Because I am also jingoistic and reactionary...keep up.
Bwhahahahaahahaha!!!
(I love the Spanish, Dutch, and French, by the way.)

That's funny, I want to see this :) Do you have a link or anything to the boycott?
Also, while we're on a related topic, I notice there is a lot of "Canada owes the US for stuff" sentiment in American media, particularly the right wing media.
I'm not sure where it comes from, and I think this kind of rhetoric is part of Canadian's frustration with the US. There's this impression in the Canadian mindset that Americans continually take advantage of Canadians, are are completely unappreciative.
For instance, for as long as such numbers have been tracked, America imports more from Canada than Canada receives in in return trade. Canadians supply Americans with vital goods and services such as power and oil that allow the America to function.
On a more nationalistic front, I think Canadians also believe that they shoulder a disproportionate amount of the burden of war. Despite the fact that the war in Afghanistan was a response to a foreign attack on American soil, Canadians did go to war in support of the Americans, and did end up shouldering more than its fair share of casualties, some of which, came at the hands of American friendly fire.
When these kinds of acts are met with perceived of lack of gratitude from the Americans, it can feel a bit bitter. I think this kind of American attitude is in part responsible for negative feelings from Canadians towards Americans.

Gregor if you disagree with someone, you could at least provide some reasoned debate instead of just attacking them personally. It doesn't do well for you or anyone else in this community.
Be respectful, as we have been to you--even though I'm wont not to after you openly stated your dislike of "Canadian attitudes".

If you're going to post on these forums be respectful. You might convince a lot more people with facts rather than just making accusations towards entire countries and insulting fellow forum members.

I apologize, but I mean no disrespect. I am not mocking your English, I simply do not understand what you are asking. I prefaced my asking you to rephrase your question with "I'm sorry" to show that I was trying not to be confrontational.
You said, "If you talking about business perspective? this is bad and will me or anyone avoid watching this hollywood version of Capt America?"
The presence of question marks indicates to me that you are posing a question, but I do not understand what information you are trying to elicit.
On the topic of the Marvel forums, can you link me to the threads where you guys discuss this? I'm curious to see what people are saying.

I looked on the wikipedia, and Captain America is being portrayed by Chris Evans, who's born and raised in America.

Even if he was Canadian, I don't see what the fuss is about. Hollywood has been known to recast characters without regard to nationality, race and even gender. Even with national icons such as Robin Hood or William Wallace. What's the fuss about Captain America, who's only just a recent fictional character?
Wow, the reaction to this smacked me up side the head. Maybe it's because I have never read comics, so I have no emotional investment. I honestly gave a mental shrug to the news they were changing the name. It made sense to me that a movie called "Captain AMERICA" would not sell as well in markets outside America. If it's a market that down right dislikes us, well then, it's a no brainer that it wouldn't sell.
Hey, just like a lot of people, I tend to have a "kiss my American ass, flip you the bird, etc" reaction to hatred of America. I just can't get that excited over a comic book character and a company trying to make a buck. Now, if that same company is going to hurt real breathing human beings, I start getting interested.
I did a search on "Captain America boycott" and the following link popped up, among many others. ‘Thor’ To Be Boycotted By ‘Conservative Citizens’ Group ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

I am speechless. The CCG is getting up in arms because a fictional character is being played by the wrong skin-colored person. With all the other injustices in the world, this is what brings these people out of the woodwork?
This picture is going to drive them insane:

Warchief, we all know that English is not your primary language. No one was making fun or attacking it. He asked, politely, for you to rephrase what you were saying because it was unclear. Sometimes what you write is unclear and asking for a clarification is not a personal or petty attack, if anything, it shows that people are trying to understand your point of view.

Nope, don't think any Taliban retards are going to be watching any Hollywood movies no matter what they call it. Well at least they won't watch it when anyone else can see them.

If you ever end up in Iceland ask if anyone is offended by Thor being made into a comic book character. If that doesn't get them, surely the dark skin will drive them over the edge.

No, I wasn't aware of that. I'm surprised they will admit to watching anything from Satans like ourselves. I suppose they justify their hypocrisy by saying they need to watch the enemy.

True...I also remember when i watched this in the History channel, way back 1990's (Operation Iraqi Freedom era) when some Americans was kidnap by Saddam's troops and they were used as human shields...one of the captors says (when he was already rescued) he witnesed when these extremist watched the American Funniest Home Videos, and he remembered how they were laughing and amused.
