Jan. 8, 2006) -- With Ernie Accorsi retiring, the Giants' general manager search now looks like a reality version of All in the Family.

Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli rejected the chance to interview for the Giants' general manager job Monday, but his father-in-law, Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, is a contender for it, according to a high-ranking NFL source.

It is, according to the source, a longshot. But there is a shot that Parcells could wind up leaving Dallas to finish up his NFL career as the general manager of the Giants, shopping for all of New York's groceries and teaming up with the Mara family once again.

The Giants have debated -- and are continuing to debate -- the merits of such a move. Parcells' future is one of the hottest mysteries in the NFL. He has offered little insight into what his thinking is, even around his current Cowboys assistants.

Bill Parcells won two Super Bowls while coaching the Giants from 1983-1990.
During a Monday morning meeting in which at least five Cowboys assistant coaches contracts are up, Parcells offered no direction about where he would be this season or even if he would be in Dallas. His coaches left the 45-minute meeting with no more answers than when they entered it.

Now the big questions, the ones likely to be answered first, involve Parcells. The Giants want their new general manager to yield heavy influence on the decision about whether or not to keep head coach Tom Coughlin. The decision on Coughlin is expected Friday or Monday, which means the Giants' decision on a GM is imminent.

Whether or not Parcells actually wants it might have no bearing on the leading candidate for it. The leading candidate is thought to be another member of the Giants' family, director of player personnel Jerry Reese, who at least three other teams have attempted to hire in recent years.

Where the Giants could be left scrambling is that Reese is on the Tennessee Titans' short list for successors to their former general manager, Floyd Reese (no relation). If the Giants lost Jerry Reese to Tennessee and failed to land Parcells from Dallas, then they could be left with their most unlikely option: They might be forced to turn to vice president-player evaluations Chris Mara, who is the brother of Giants president/CEO John Mara.

RAISING ARIZONA
Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, wide receiver Anquan Boldin, defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and safety Adrian Wilson contributed as much as they could to Arizona during the season.

But they have been entrusted with the role of making even more important contributions during the offseason.

Each of the four players has been asked to interview the head-coaching candidates that have visited Arizona over the past week. The Cardinals want the players to conduct their own line of questioning and report back to ownership, which has formed its own impressions during its own interviews.

Monday, the Arizona players spent time interviewing Tenneessee offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who also met with Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart. On Tuesday, the Cardinals players and ownership group are expected to interview Steelers assistant head coach Russ Grimm.

It has created extra rounds of talks for the candidates, but the Cardinals want to do everything they can to come up with the best possible hire.

WAYNE'S WORLD
The reason Pete Carroll even interviewed with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga and not with Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill is due to the enormous respect he has for the Miami owner.

Yet not even a master businessman such as Huizenga is expected to be persuasive enough to convince Carroll to leave USC, where he is expected to contend for a national championship in 2007.

One person who knows Carroll said Monday that he doubts that the deal will come together. Carroll likes his current job, and situation, way too much to leave it.

But the more Carroll wins at USC, the more he will attract owners' attention, and the more apt they will be to offer him the type of power and control he needs to have to ever leave USC.

THE APPRENTICES
Going back to John Madden, no franchise has been better at identifying bright young coaching talent than the Oakland Raiders.

Their problem is that they have been unable to land it.

Three years ago the Raiders offered their head-coaching position to Cowboys assistant head coach Sean Payton, only to see him be talked out of the job by the football mentors he leaned on. The Raiders then settled for Norv Turner.

Last year, the Raiders offered their head-coaching position to Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino, only to see him jilt Oakland at the last moment. The Raiders then settled for Art Shell.

This year, the Raiders already have been rebuffed in some of the overtures they made to San Diego offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Yet the Raiders have identified another bright young coaching talent -- USC assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian, the 32-year-old who served as the Raiders' quarterbacks coach in 2004.

There's some question around the league as to whether the Raiders view Sarkisian as a head coach or offensive coordinator candidate. Knowing Al Davis' history, it should be readily apparent that no bright coach is too young to take over the head role from him.

Many analysts have said it'll be either TO or The Big Tuna that will return next year. Not both... So this is a real possibility.

Yea I can see Parcells going either way. Romo has a little exp behind him now and the question is which team he thinks has a better and quickest future for superbowl. imo

Parcells is a great coach and would be a great general manager. The Giants would be crazy to let him get away. Parcells would be crazy to put up with Jerry Jones and TO for another season.
