I was just wondering how many times a week our mmaworld.org grapplers roll? I usually train 4-5 times a week. 2 no gi classes and 2-3 gi classes. The gi classes are usually an hour of technique with an hour rolling after.

anywhere from 2-6 just depends on how much time I have. Since I broke my foot I am still limited on what I can do, I have been boxing 2 days a week and light grappling no gi as well.

^did you get your purple belt yet? what are some of your favorite submissions?

I like to use the ezekiel and lapel chokes a lot in gi. In no-gi i tend to use the d'arce and rear naked choke more.

I haven't been able to go to the gym since the injuries :(

I've never rolled BJJ before, but I've watched a lot of Youtube. The ezekiel choke seems so hard to defend, and I never really understood how people weren't getting trapped by it left and right.

The defence for it that I saw was to reach one arm above your head, like you're raising a hand to answer a question. To me, it seemed like such a weak defence, because it now removes that one arm from being able to defend any other moves.

In my experience, the Ezekiel choke is ridiculously easy to defend. Just putting my hand on my cheek like half of the Home Alone face is enough to defend. Sure, you have lost a hand defending, but they are using two for the attack. The thing I have found is that once it is on, there isn't really any coming back. It is not a blood choke, but a windpipe crush. I don't care how strong you are or how thick your neck is, crushing your windpipe earns a quick tap.

I roll three times a week plus any open mats on Saturday or Sunday. Unfortunately, I broke my little toe this morning while rolling. Son of a gun, it hurts. To add insult to injury, tonight is belt testing. We will see how this goes with a gimpy toe.

Not gotten that damn purple yet, but to be honest - at this point I really dont care it is just a belt, if and when I get it, I get it.

I think there are to many subs to pick from that I like. Triangle is a back pocket technique for me - I used it so much and got so good at it I was not practicing anything else - so I now only use it once in a while. I really like Ezekiel, darst, over the top from behind to arm bar (I will try to explain below), but lately I have not been working any subs I have been working on all open guard and butterfly - working reversals and sweeps as well as defense. I have a tendancy to play very conservative and be satisfied with only defending and not getting in to a bad position - which has made my close guard and defense from my back unreal. The higher ups told me I needed to start opening up and not being so conservative and they are right. So I have started playing the above as well as letting myself get in to a bad position and working out.

over the top from behind to arm bar - for this it is a simple armbar with a sneaky entry -

While in side/back control one hook in most of the time not a have to have though, I will often look as if I am trying with all my might to get the rear naked or some other choke, letting the person trap my one arm, I will then peel off at an angle over their head throwing one leg across face and already having one hook in (if no hook is in, then as I come over I will throw hook in) I roll at an angle and flip them over to a straight traditional armbar.

I hope that made sense to you guys - I will try to record it and post it if I get a chance.

What is your body type? I am finding that guys my own size are hard to triangle, especially considering I have little hobbit legs. I have been trying to use the triangle setup to feed in to a an armbar or oma plata.

I agree the ezekiel is pretty easy to defend. You can even just tuck your chin making it hard to pass. I usually just stick my arm straight up when i feel it coming. Last ditch effort is usually a sweep....The reason i like the ezekiel is i have a few nice set ups for it. It also works well to transition to an armbar when they go to block. It also works well from the back when they are trying to defend a rear-naked choke.

i've been digging armbars more lately. I never really got many taps with armbars except from the mount. Been getting a lot more in transition from the bottom nowadays. I usually transition from a triangle set up to an armbar. Also been working on a nice collar choke transition to armbar from the back.

I am 5'10" roughly 165-175 depending on water, amount of work outs etc. Having short hobbit legs might make it difficult for triangles esp if your opponent has a stout neck and shoulders. At that point fake the triangle to armbar as you said of even fake triangle, fake armbar to omoplata or sweep :)

I have been working on the "chess" portion of my game - being 3-10 steps ahead of what I want to do and 3-5 ahead of what my opponent thinks I am going to do - it really is satisfying when you out play the game and dominate or even get the sub by out thinking your opponent.

I would like to roll more, but I only get to roll once or twice a week.

THIS is what I need to work on. I have a lot of trouble setting up for submissions, and I tend to be a very very defensive grappler. I need to be more aggressive, but I just hate leaving myself open to be swept or submitted if I can prevent it. So usually, my rolls end in a stalemate, even if I am in a dominant position the entire time.

If I see someone leave an opening for a position I will jump on it, but I have trouble making things happen. I am good at getting a dominant position, and defending sweeps and submissions, but I have trouble setting up submissions. So basically, I'm only good at capitalizing off of someone's mistakes, not encouraging them to make one.

I'm down to training 3 days a week lately. My schedule is 11am-8pm right now, so my schedule just doesn't allow it. I've been hitting the gym after work and running in the morning to stay active when not training BJJ

Hey guys, just letting you know that I'm still alive.

I've been without internet the past month (I'm at a coffee shop right now) but I should have stable internet next week.

I haven't done any kickboxing or grappling or anything since November for a number of reasons, but I went to a BJJ class with a friend last week and I fell in love. The instructor and the students were incredible, no egos, no douchebags, and the instructor knew his stuff.

My shoulders, arms, and abs were DESTROYED after the 2 hour class, but I had a great time--first reaal time grappling with a gi, and I definitely prefer it to no-gi.

However, I'm moving in a few days to a place with only TMA's, and a couple MMA gyms--no where that I could find teaches BJJ, at least with a gi. The MMA places teach no-gi of course, but I was really starting to like grappling with a gi.

Anyways, yeah I'm still alive and hoping to get back into shape/training.

Cheers!
