I'm still in shock...that Serra won...and...that UFC was on ESPN. MMA is getting some good coverage here.

Funny story to share.

So here I am leaving the IFL show last night at about 11:30 PM. I finally get to my car and there are some people in the parking lot. I hear someone say in a surprised voice, "Diego lost?" Of course that pricked my ears up and I go walking up to these people. I say, "did I hear you guys say Diego lost?" They say "yeah," and before I can take a breathe someone adds, "and GSP got knocked out in the first round." Now I could believe Diego lost, but GSP? I was stunned. Stunned immediately turned into skepticism. "Are you guys BSing me?" They proceed to try to convince me it's true. Worst thing is that I don't know where these guys live so I can't make them pay if they are lying to me.

OK, I got a three hour drive ahead of me and I just can't stand not knowing for sure. I know of a bar about 10 minutes into Moline that plays the UFCs, so I head for there. I nab some people as they are walking out and ask them if they were watching the show. Sure enough I get the same story.

It still took me another 15 minutes to quit mumbling, "I just can't believe it."

Diego losing to Koscheck was no surprise to me. Now, on the other hand.....GSP getting KO'd by Serra??? As it has been stated before, simply "Wow".

Frankly, this is what I love the most about mma; the fact that anything can happen.

You know, you are right. I was thinking the same thing. I did not watch the PPV, but got results from my friend by Nextel. When he told me the news about GSP getting knocked out, the first thing i thought was that there were going to be knuckleheads on other forums yelling "fix". I started thinking about how in MMA there are so many more variables than in boxing, including more ways to get injured IN TRAINING, which impacts the outcome of a fight. Moreso, the fact that you have so many "weapons of choice" in MMA which balances out the advantages one fighter might have over another. I think that getting hit in the head with those baby gloves is just SO much more different than a large padded boxing glove that it throws the "ability to take a punch" factor off. I was hoping that Matt Serra would win (according to me, he only had a 'prayer' by submission), but would not have been disappointed if GSP won, because he seems like genuinely a nice guy (watch the Sherdog vid. interview of GSP after the fight. You feel so sorry for the guy and you want him to bounce back fast). My point is, who the heck on this planet expected Matt Serra to win by striking????? MAYBE Matt Serra. Like you said, that is why we love the "Mixed" in MMA.

I saw the post fight interview with GSP too duran. You're right, how can you not feel bad for him. He's just so gracious in defeat. Really when he wins too. Gotta love the underdog taking the day thing though.

I wonder why Matt Hughes was so happy? Could be a lot of reasons. He did predict that Serra would win. Does he think Serra is easier for him to beat? Maybe he is simply delighted at the thought of fighting Serra for the belt. Maybe it was just a matter of people realizing how difficult it is to be a defending champion. Hughes has said for years that the stress of being the champ wears on you.

duran

I get the same feeling that you are implying- that Hughes thinks he can walk through Serra.

It's a shame that GSP did not 'validate' his title holding with at least one defense. His skill and conditioning are def. not what you would call flash in the pan. Think back to that interview. GSP could not put into words, and it had nothing to do with his English, what was missing from his game on Saturday night. He was trying not to make it sound like he was making excuses out of respect to Serra, but he was trying to say that he did not have it mentally. Pressure to defend? Probably part of it. We can all think back to our own competitions and wonder how the heck we lost "to that guy" certain times and how we won certain times. The mindset you have in a fight is so huge, who knows how high a percentage it is of your game.

What is great about this is that GSP will be back. No talk like the Kos-Diego bout that 'he got what he deserved', etc. He will be back and people will pay to see him fight. I would be shocked if he would not look spectacular in his next fight. Also, I think it is just great that Matt Serra's BJJ studio and merchandise business will now explode, meaning he and his brother will make some money, and this should shut up those 'fans' who call these guys TUF'ers.

GSP is a class act, very profesional and very gracious in both victory and defeat. He is a true sportsman and a credit to the sport. I can think of only one other guy that is as good or a better a representative of mma than GSP (Randy Couturre)
Hughs' reaction could have been all of the things you pointed out or it could have simply been that he was caught up in the excitement of the moment like the rest of us. I would like to think that his reaction was not based on getting enjoyment out of seeing GSP defeated, since GSP was gracious to Hughes and has shown him alot of respect. I would like to think that kind of reaction would be below Hughes but I'm not too sure about that.

mindset goes farther than you would imagine. I remember way back when...... I ran cross country and track in high school and there was a kid that beat me at the regional meet. Afterwards I found out he was a freshman and the following week at states I absolutely trounced him. He didn't even place simply because I refused to be beaten twice by a freshman. kinda funny but just an example of how the mind works. i am sure everyone has a story similar. I am wondering what was going on in GSP's head both pre adn post fight.

duran
04-09-2007, 07:32 PM
Mastiff: That is EXACTLY what I am referring to. The mind is very powerful.

I like to use the Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas fight as an example of this also. Prior to that fight some guys would crap their pants before stepping into the ring with Tyson. They were beaten before the bell. Buster Douglas made Tyson look mortal and then everyone wanted a piece of him after that and actually thought they could beat him because Douglas took away his invincibility.

Mike Tyson is best ever! Thread closed.

:joke:

Mike was untouchable until his father/trainer passed and the devil err Don King bought his soul err put him under new contract. And wanted him to only be a one sided power punching head hunter.

I feel sorry for Tyson. He lost his way when he lost his father.

Yep, yep. After Cus D'Amato died he still had Kevin Rooney training him, and then you are right, people starting saying that Rooney was no good for him, when in fact, Rooney was his last link to Cus and Jim Jacobs. Even long after Tyson's skill level dropped, Kevin Rooney could have turned him around. Everyone on the planet knew it except him.

Don King is actually a convicted murderer. He served time for killing his business partner.

Good point Keithpas. It could be that simple.

Of course all over the Internet the worst possible intentions are being put to his reaction. I had heard before the fight that Hughes had picked Serra to win. That was my first thought when I saw the fight. It would be my reaction if I picked Serra when no one else did.

ease - no, I don't. It's common and public knowledge, though. He was a big numbers/gambling guy, in Cleveland, Ohio, I think and shot someone over a debt. He was convicted of second degree murder.
Why would any fighter want to associate himself with a guy like this?

This guy MUST be kept out of MMA. He just ain't good people.

What Duran said about Don King is true, he was convicted of 2nd degree murder and he served time in a Federal Penitentiary.
Getting back to GSP; he probably should not have lost to Hughes in their first fight but did for reasons much like his loss to Serra. My advice to GSP (I know, I know; my advice and a buck will get you a crappy cup of coffee), would be to join another training camp and focus on the mental game. All of the phyisical tools are there and all of the mma disciplines are complete except for the mental game.
