ANAHEIM, Calif., September 22 — One of the most anticipated rematches in the sport, Matt Hughes versus B.J. Penn, is one step closer to taking place as both fighters stepped on the scale Friday afternoon.
Hughes, a dominant champion in the welterweight division, was supposed to steamroll the former lightweight contender when he moved up in weight for a chance at UFC gold in January 2004.
Things did not go as planned, as the talented Hawaiian shocked the world with his dominating upset of Hughes.
Outside the newly christened Honda Center (formerly the Arrowhead Pond) a ripped Hughes came in at a stout 170 pounds, while Penn weighed in three-and-a-half pounds under the welterweight limit at 166.5 for Saturday’s tilt.
