What makes UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes great? If you listen to his trainer Pat Miletich, it's his fighter's immense strength. According to Matt Pena, the champ's boxing coach, it's his intense work ethic. As far as Hughes is concerned, it's his all-around game.
All three facets of the welterweight's success were on display when Sherdog Insider visited Hughes' Bettendorf, Iowa training camp earlier this month. Facing B.J. Penn, the only man to defeat him in his last 19 fights, the champ's focus appears to be particularly zoned in.
Will redemption be his? Or does the submission master Penn have his number?

Okay....and then? Rich Franklin said he he broke his hand at the end of either the 2nd or 3rd round in his 5 round win over David Loiseau. Lots of people "suffer" through injury. BJ was not ready to go all 5 rounds. At the start of the 3rd he was totally gassed. Hughes would kick him and he would just eat it. He didn't even try to move or dodge it.
But BJ can make up whatever he wants. Even if it did happen, lots of other people still make due, and continue to fight....some even win.

A seperated rib is far from a broken hand...it affects the way you breath, the way you move etc etc etc....A broken hand is painful, and affects the you grab and punch...you can still fight....if you cant breath you cant fight....seems like all the Matt lovers just say he was gased when that is not true....

Ok well. I found out that he was not gassed and it was and injury, here on these forums. So that being said I retract my "gassed" remark. My point was Rich got a UNAMINOUS win after he broke his had early on. Dispite his injury he pressed on and was still active enough, to get that. I know its harder with a rib, so excuse me for making your buddy feel small for giving up.
I just look at BJ the same way as I do Tito a little too cocky. Matt won, thats it. Matt will not loose untill its his time to loose.....another subject another time ;)

I just saw the replay which is the first time i have seen the fight. #1 at the end of round 2 he killed his legs attempting to do a triangle. #2 he was gassed he could barely keep his hands up in the beginiing of round 3. His cardio was poop, and i know that GSP will be a better fight, but with same result. If BJ had an EXCUSE of seperated ribs, well then if Matt lost he could say it was because of an eye poke. BJ Penn was not in any way ready for this fight. He did look pretty good in the first round and most of the second. But did not have the conditioning that he needs to compete with Matt. Short notice on this fight had an impact but to my knowledge he was training for another fight. Can you STILL hear it MATT MATT MATT MATT...etc...etc.....:violin:
