RUEDIGER DENIAL HITS CHORD

Yesterday, the California State Athletic Commission Executive Director Armando Garcia denied licensure of a last-minute match-up that would have pitted “The Ultimate Fighter 5” contestant Gabe Ruediger against 2000 Olympic wrestling silver medalist Katsuhiko Nagata at this Saturday’s K-1 “Dynamite!! USA” event in Los Angeles. The CSAC stated the decision was made for administrative concerns, a blanket term that could encompass a variety of reasons under the Commission’s jurisdiction.
One person not amicable with the decision is Ruediger, who says he’s acquired two lawyers regarding the matter, but would not comment further.
“His [Ruediger's] license was not suspended nor was it denied,” CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia clarified this morning. “His renewal application is still under review and he will not be available [to fight] this Saturday.”
Ruediger was licensed with the CSAC and fought in two sanctioned events in 2006, which included a second round loss to Melvin Guillard at September’s UFC 63 in Anaheim.
In recent weeks, the lightweight has been unable to avoid the spotlight. Ruediger’s struggles on the Spike TV reality show were well documented and a focal point of the series’ fifth episode when dehydrated and delirious, the Californian collapsed to the floor during his weight-cutting process and was later taken to a hospital for treatment. The next day, UFC president Dana White excused Ruediger from the show’s taping.
On May 18, Zuffa LLC. accelerated the termination of the contract Ruediger had signed to participate on the show. Ruediger was taken off a temporary suspension list the cast had been placed on to keep the show’s results under wraps, and was subsequently picked up by FEG promoters planning the June 2 event to replace Javier Vasquez.
Undisclosed circumstances will now ensure Ruediger does not step into the ring Saturday.
“I am going to give him every opportunity to get re-licensed in California,” said Garcia. “That process just can’t be done before Saturday.”
