I have been out of town on business and why i was out iwas looking for a place to roll. When i found a true bjj place i went in and talk to the instructor to see how he felt about an outside guy rolling with his students which he didn't care is all about the art. This leads me into my title. I was rolling with another blue belt and locked in what i learned was an americana. After done and shaking hands he told me that my kimura was realy tight and he had no way out. Not wanting to act like an idiot i went along with it and said thanks but what truly is it.

That looks like an americana to me, but I'm not an expert.

Of course the kimura is a reversed americana. Easy to get mixed up.

True that. I used to get them mixed up all the time. Still do some times. Personally I like Kimura's better. ;)

That looks like an amricana to me as well. The hand is more behind the back tearing the labrum/sholder socket on the kimura.

The "Americana" is from the mounted/side mount position typically, but can be gotten from other angles and is considered a shoulder lock - this is the one in the picture

The "Kimura" is from the guard or side mount etc and is where the arm is down - - - - This got it's name from Helio being beat by from the "Kimura" which is where it got it's name.

The main difference is the position of the arm - Up or Down. They tweak different parts of the arm as a result.

I hope that helps ;)
