QUICK ARMBAR PROPELS AOKI AT DEEP X

Aoki Scores 38-Second Submission Against Akira

By Gino Mongelli

TOKYO – Shinya Aoki needed just 38 seconds to submit Pedro Akira by rear-naked choke Sunday at the grappling-only DEEP X event. Marking DEEP’s third show of the weekend, the card also featured Masakazu Imanari against Bruno Frazzato.

Takuya Kitade stunned everyone with his flexibility and rubber guard skills, which led him to an extremely tight armbar in the opening movements of the his match with Ryota. Ryota also showed great skill as he attempted an omoplata in the final seconds of the final round. Kitade won 6-4.

In another undercard match, Mauricio Souza put on a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu clinic against catch-wrestler Hiroyuki Abe. Souza moved from side mount to mount and then to reverse scarf-hold, as he maintained dominant positions and racked up points. Souza then moved to rear mount, where he transitioned from a triangle choke to an armbar for the tapout at 3:54 of round one.

Imanari shocked everyone with his spinning leg lock attacks in ZST. He then moved on to become the featherweight champion of the DEEP and Cage Rage promotions. He met his match this day. The positional control of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert Frazzato stifled Imanari’s offense. Frazzato took the match by a landslide, winning 10-0

Sounds like a great event. It's looking like DEEP is stepping up here. With PRIDE slowly dissolving , I think this makes some room for DEEP to flourish.

Definitely. I hear DEEP has big plans for 2007 and beyond. Hopefully they follow through with everything. They have potential to do some good things. I don't think they will ever be big globally, but they have alot of appeal in Japan.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I mean they can sign pretty good talent like Bustamante and Aoki, so they can do some really good things. They're doing all sorts of stuff. DEEP for mma, then there's DEEP-X (grappling) and DEEP Glove (kickboxing). Pretty amazing.
