SOBRAL OUTGRAPPLES MIR AT TUFF-N-UFF ‘BRAWL’

Imes Taps Out Lucero In Heavyweight Showdown

By Brian O’Hara

LAS VEGAS – Renato Sobral defeated Frank Mir 6-2 in a submission bout at TUFF-N-UFF “Brawl in the Barn” Friday night at the South Point Hotel and Casino.

Sobral, who owns an MMA submission victory over Mauricio Rua, outworked Mir during their six-minute submission grappling match. Mir, the former UFC heavyweight champion whose career was derailed by a motorcycle accident, cannot buy a break. In addition to his grappling loss to Sobral, Mir has dropped two of his past three MMA decisions, including a first-round TKO loss to Brandon Vera at UFC 65. It appears more and more likely the 28-year-old will never recapture past glory.

Meanwhile, heavyweight Brad Imes – a runner-up on season two of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series – defeated Vince Lucero by rear-naked choke submission just 2:26 into the first round. Both men came out swinging and connecting with heavy blows. Imes, however, leaped onto Lucero’s back and secured a takedown. The tapout followed soon after.

Elsewhere, Nick Breakers stopped Carlos Fletes by submission, as he secured a rear-naked choke 3:07 into the second round. Fletes dominated Breakers on his feet but had a difficult time handling him on the ground. The fighters brought the crowd to its feet in the second round, as they exchanged blows. Eventually, the fight moved to the ground, where Breakers proved to be the better man.

In other action, an action-packed kickboxing bout between Dan Evenson and Ethan Cox ended in a no contest when Cox delivered a hook near the ropes and sent Everson crashing through the ropes and onto the floor. The bout was stopped as a safety precaution.

Glad to see Sobral win, even if Frank lost. He should just retire and keep comentating.

It was good to see Brad Imes get a win in the MMA portion of the event as well. I'm not a big fan of his, but he is usually entertaining. I saw him in one of the bloodiest matches ever in the pre-Zuffa WEC. It was against Mike Dexter I believe.

Yeah man. That fight was the most bloodiest fights I've seen. I think they even made a t-shirt.

Yep, I've got the T-shirt. Bought it from Brad himself and then hung out and watched a couple fights with him. Pretty cool guy.

Thanks for posting these results Grabaka. All I had heard was that Mir was going to be fighting Sobral in a grappling match, not not where and when.

I really wasn't surprised to see that babalu won. I just want him to get back to his winning ways and back in the octagon.

Me too. I wonder though if he can still hang with the top guys?

By all rights he should have beaten Lambert. He had his back for what seemed forever. I don't know what his problem was that night but if they fought again I would pick Sobral again. Nothing against Lambert I just think Renato is a better fighter.

Other than that Chuck was his kryptonite. He was on a ten fight winning streak and they were for the most part all very impressive wins. I am sure he still has it he just needs to get his head right.

Yup. I was shocked when he lost to Lambert. As far as Chuck, he had a horrible game plan. I'm sure if he could give Chuck some trouble if not beat him if he had a better one.

I was there when he lost to Lambert. Shocked wasn't even the word for how I felt. That was the fight I was most excited to see.

And yeah running at Chuck swinging wildly is not a solid gameplan if you want to win. Only a solid game plan if you want to be KO'd in the first. Oh wait thats what happened.
