I saw the Rich Crunkilton-Mike Joy WEC fight on VERSUS last night. This Crunkilton cat ran a clinic on Joy and submitted him with what Frank Mir called what sounded like a "Dars" choke. I have never practiced jiu jitsu, but this move capitalized the "art" in martial arts. He set it up with a deep half nelson w/ his left arm, then kinda alligator rolled to his left, which turned Joy over, and then he locked hands and choked. I don' have i on tape, so I cannot describe it fully. If anyone saw this, what is the correct name of this choke and since I have never seen it before, does it only work on a novice? ALso, can you give me a "frame by frame" of it? It was freaking beautiful.

D'arce is the evil twin sister of the Anaconda. The arm positions are reversed.

Where the Anaconda generally finishes after a roll and walking the legs in, the D'arce/ Brabo choke finishes without a roll and can actually finish a guy from within his own half guard. But yes you heard Mir correctly.

Gentlemen - thanks for your efforts. That does help out. I am thinking now that after Crunkilton sunk in that deep half with his left arm (which baited Joy to try to go into guard) he was able to reach around and grab his own right bicep and then lay on his left side and 'scoot' toward Joy which tightened the choke. That makes sense, right?

Don't you have a wife, or son or some other unsuspecting loved one you you could slap it on real fast?

Funny you should post that. Picture this. When I was watching the training vid you posted of the two chokes, I kept replaying them trying to 'get it' while moving my arms around and contorting my body trying to mimic the moves, all the while sitting in my chair at the monitor. The bride walks by, pokes her head in the door, and then QUICKLY walks away without saying anything. Seriously, I could tell that she could sense that I was about to ask her to get on the floor so I could try the D'arce choke on her and she bailed before I could say it! Her ex literally drinks 30 beers a day and I have this problem and she doesn't know which is worse! Not even kidding. There is always 8-10 guys who train exclusively in BJJ at the house where I watch the UFC PPV's, so next Sat. I will be able to apply these chokes.
