Ultimate Fighting Championship Welterweight contender – ranked #4 on the MMAWeekly MMA Top Ten – Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez announced via his web site that he will be fighting Joe “Diesel” Riggs on December 13th. Apparently the fight will take place on an unannounced UFC show on SpikeTV, presumably a UFC Fight Night card.
With his UFC record standing at 5-0, and never being defeated, it would seem that Sanchez would soon be in line for a shot at the welterweight title currently held by Matt Hughes. The division, however, is one of the most talent-rich in the UFC with Georges St. Pierre challenging Hughes for the belt in November.
St. Pierre and BJ Penn, ranked #2 and #3 respectively in the MMA Top Ten rankings, are the only fighters that stand between Sanchez and the title. And with Penn having recently lost to Hughes and St. Pierre getting his shot in November, if Sanchez were to get past Riggs, it would make sense that he would finally get the shot that he feels is his destiny.
In a video interview with MMAWeekly in August of this year – available in the Premium Members’ MMAWeekly TV section – Sanchez commented, “It’s been my dream and my destiny to go in there an challenge the champion and beat the champion and go in there and knock him out.”
Riggs has had an up and down career in the UFC, both in determining a weight class to fight in and his win-loss record. He is 4-3 in the UFC with a recent win over Jason Von Flue in the welterweight class following a middleweight loss to Mike Swick.
Sanchez is currently in Mexico City training boxing with some members of the Mexican Olympic team and was unavailable for comment.
