By Mark Pickering
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
While the third and final instalment of the bitter rivalry between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock signifies the culmination of the sport's most storied feud - the September 10th Spike TV special at Hollywood's Hard Rock Live Arena dawns the arrival of the next generation of UFC warriors.
With the UFC’s current title holders in Sylvia, Liddell, Franklin and Hughes each dominating their respective divisions the UFC mandate is to distinguish the contenders from the pretenders and establish legitimate challengers for their ‘fabulous four’.
With a new crop of heralded talent comes expectancy and intrigue. For the majority, purely competing on the same event as Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock will be sufficient motivation in itself.
The fight fraternity’s gazing eyes will be deeply fixated on the sport’s latest prospects, establishing the necessity for fighters to command a composure and willingness befitting of their considerable hype.
Those who prevail will scale the proverbial ladder of pugilism and return to the octagon – firmly registering under the radar of their adversaries.
The fight card features the customary batch of TUF alumni, established veterans and UFC newcomers.
Kendall "Da Spyder" Grove, who bested Ed Herman in a close decision victory to become TUF3's middleweight winner, will compete in the first of a contracted nine fights against UFC debutant ‘The Exorcist’ Chris Price who faces an arduous battle to keep his perfect record intact.
TUF3’s middleweight runner up Ed “Short Fuse” Herman takes to the octagon to face Edmonton, Alberta, Canada’s Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald. Herman, who was awarded a contract after his titanic effort in the Ultimate Fighter finale, will look to showcase his skills against submission specialist and UFC newcomer MacDonald.
In a battle of Ultimate Fighter alumni Matt "The Hammer" Hamill, who was robbed of a shot at the competition's semi-finals when he was forced to withdraw with an ill-fated arm injury, steps into the octagon to face season two's Seth Petruzelli, who holds a victory over UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn. Cincinatti, Ohio native Hamill, a decorated three-time NCAA All-American wrestler and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games hopeful, will look to repeat the success of his first round win at the TU3’s season finale over Jesse Forbes while Petruzelli will battle to maintain a four-year winning streak.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace Tony DeSouza returns to the UFC after a five year absence to throwdown with UFC debutant Dustin Hazelett. Peru’s DeSouza sports a 2-1 record in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, after scoring success pay-per-view victories in 2001 before losing out to DEEP veteran Jutaro Nakao at UFC 33. DeSouza, meanwhile, has established a reputation in the Midwest as a ferocious welterweight. 20-year-old Hazelett, who fights out of Jorge Gurgel’s main academy in Middletown, has won his last three contests inside the opening minute and is set for the greatest challenge of his fledgling career on October 10th.
TUF3 alumni Rory Singer and Josh Haynes meet in an intriguing middleweight showdown. Singer, who recorded a speedy victory of Stoke, England’s Ross Pointon at the season finale has been seasoning his skills with Pat Miletich and Team MFS in Iowa. Ultimate Fighter 3 Light-Heavyweight runner-up Haynes has continued his trend of moving down in weight class to now compete at 185 lbs. Both fighters will vie for a continued UFC berth and register a pivotal victory.
In an anticipated Brazil vs. USA match-up the welterweight division’s resident pitbull Thiago Alves collides with California’s John Alessio. American Top Team’s Alves holds a 2-2 record in the UFC and is coming off a defeat to Jon Fitch at UFN 5. Alessio, 27, faced a daunting baptism against Diego Sanchez in May but battled fearlessly before succumbing to a unanimous judge’s decision.
CageWarriors & Fightfest welterweight champion Forrest Petz, who overcome Sam Morgan in his inaugural UFC appearance tangles with TUF2’s Marcus Davis. Former pro boxer Davis is riding a five fight win streak since appearing on the UFC’s second installment of their reality TV series.
Seven-time middleweight King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt confronts the highly touted Crafton Wallace. Decision specialist Marquardt stands at 2-0 in the UFC having outfoxed Joe Doerksen and Ivan Salaverry in the competitive 185 pound division. Wallace, a gutsy Muay Thai fighter, suffered a submission defeat to Martin Kampmann is his sole outing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
