Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - Most would have excused Rich Franklin if he decided, after a seven month absence due to injury, that facing a dangerous opponent like Anderson Silva in his first fight back would have been a bit much. Put in someone untested, dust off an old veteran, or any combination thereof, and it would have been all right – hey, he earned a break. But that’s not the way this champion thinks.

“David Loiseau is a gentleman and I like him a lot,” explains Franklin. “Evan Tanner’s a gentleman and I like him a lot, and Nate Quarry’s a gentleman and I like him a lot. But it doesn’t stop me or them from trying to put on a good show. And it’s the same with Anderson Silva. I know he’s not a trash talker, he’s a great guy, and he’s a gentleman. But that’s not gonna stop me or him from trying to put on a great show. And that’s something that’s difficult to convince the fans of. They like to see controversy, they like to see fighters shove each other during the weigh-ins, but really, it never makes the fight any better, because the two fighters, no matter who they are, are still gonna come out and fight their hardest anyway, and that’s what it boils down to.” In a perfect world, that’s all you need.

^^^This is why I like Rich Franklin so much. He is such a class act, no matter how he looked on TUF.

And no Rich, not all of us like the controversy and the trash talk. Wouldn't bother me a bit to see a lot less of it.

Just as a fun exercise, I went back and watched the Franklin/Tanner I fight (UFC 42) a few times.

Rich got caught in the clinch a few times and reacted the same way as he did against Anderson. Pretty scary really. He gave that similar deer-in-headlights stare -but he managed to pull out in time with Tanner. And Tanner didn't chase him as much as Anderson did.

Go watch and be amazed!

Interesting that you bring that up, because I thought about Tanner after the Franklin/Silva fight, since Tanner is fond of the clinch. What I remember of Franklin/Tanner is Tanner continuing to go for the clinch and getting frustrated by Franklin. I don't remember now how it went when they actually were clinched up. I will be sure to rewatch that fight soon. Thanks for bringing it up.
