Jamie Varner to Face Winner of McCullough/Cerrone
Rear Naked News has confirmed that the winner of Rob McCullough vs Donald Cerrone at WEC 36 will get a shot at WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner. Varner defended his belt for the first time last night in grand fashion with a first round knockout of Marcus Hicks. The young champion is currently riding a four fight win streak with all four being stopped early. Either opponent would make for an exciting fight, but the bigger draw would be a rematch with McCullough, who Varner defeated for the Lightweight Title at WEC 32 in February.

McCullough will have his hands full with Cerrone, who is 8-0 and has ended every fight via submission. In McCullough's last fight, Kenneth Alexander had a difficult time taking him down and keeping him there. McCullough showed solid grappling skills that frustrated Alexander throughout the match. The question will be whether Cerrone can get through McCullough's improved defense and take things to the ground. With the added pressure of fighting for a title shot, both men should come out with something to prove.

WEC 36 takes place on September 10 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL. As always, it will be Live on Versus.

Razor Rob will take another beating from varner in a rematch. JMO tho.

I don't think Rob will get past Cowboy. Rob is too one dimensional. Cowboy should catch him with a sub. Cerrone/Varner would be a great LW title fight. Two young, well rounded fighters. That fight would be explosive.

McCullough looked really gun shy in that fight with Alexander. I think he took that fight way too soon after the Varner fight. He took a lot of punishment from Varner. He doesn't have that swagger anymore.
