Not a stupid question at all. American football is kind of complicated, even to some Americans lol. As far as rules go, there are almost too many to explain.

Here's a link to all info you'd need to know as far as rules go for the NFL(National Football League:

If you simplify your question a bit I can help you further. I personally love American Football.

There's an endzone on either side of the field, 100 yards apart. If either team gets the ball into the endzone it's worth 6 points and is called a touchdown. After a touchdown you can either kick the ball through the upright posts for an extra point or attempt to run/pass the ball into the endzone for 2 points (this is rarely done).

They have four "downs" to move the ball 10 yards. If they move 10 or more they get to start over in "downs". If they can't move it 10 yards they usually either punt, which is kicking the ball to the other team, or try a field goal, where you must kick the ball through two upright posts on the outside of the endzone. Field goals are worth three points.

If a team gets tackled in their own endzone the other team gets two points for a "safety".

That's the basics I guess.
