Leonard Garcia agrees to Sept. 10 bout with Jens Pulver
by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Jul 21, 2008 at 3:21 pm ET
After a recent title loss to WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber, Jens Pulver (22-9-1) will look to reclaim top-contender status when he meets Leonard Garcia (11-3) Sept. 10 at WEC 36.
Garcia today told MMAjunkie.com ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) that he's agreed to the bout, which could be finalized as early as this week.
The fight is slated for the televised main card of WEC's championship double-header, which takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The event, which features a title fight between Faber and Mike Brown, as well as a WEC middleweight title fight between champ Paulo Filho and Chael Sonnen, airs live on VERSUS.
Pulver, a former UFC champion who made his WEC debut in late 2007, suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Faber in June. The event, which drew record ratings, was arguably the biggest and most successful show in WEC history. Although Pulver remains one of the WEC's biggest names, he's lost three of his past four fights, which included recent UFC losses to B.J. Penn and Joe Lauzon.
During a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com, Pulver said he underwent minor elbow surgery after the event. He predicted an October return and said he wanted to fight former Shooto star Alexandre Franca Nogueira. Nogueira, though, recently tested positive for steroids following a recent loss to Jose Aldo and faces up to a year's suspension.
Instead, he'll get Garcia, who will fight for the first time since a February TKO victory over Hiroyuki Takaya. Soon after the win, though, the former UFC fighter was arrested for alleged involvement in a Texas-based drug ring. Garcia, who continually maintained that he was simply the victim of guilt by association, was recently cleared of all pending federal charges.
In a recent interview with MMAjunkie.com, he said he hung around with the wrong person three years ago and suffered the consequences. However, he's vowed to choose his friends much more carefully.
"You can't change things in your past," said Garcia. "But looking back, I knew what [that friend] was doing, and I shouldn't have been around him. But you get the dog, you get the fleas. ... Had I known I could be in this much trouble for hanging around with him, I would have never done it. Now if I see him, I'll definitely turn the other way."

- MARK MUNOZ OUT OF WEC FIGHT WITH STEINBEISS
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - MMAWeekly.com Staff
Mark Munoz, who made an impressive debut in World Extreme Cagefighting this past June, has been forced to drop out of his upcoming fight against Steve Steinbeiss at WEC 36 on Sept. 10 due to an undisclosed injury.
Munoz’s departure from the fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight.
With a relatively thin light heavyweight division, the winner of the Munoz/Steinbeiss fight could have been a favorite to face new WEC champion Steve Cantwell, but for now at least Munoz will have to wait on that opportunity.
His opponent, Steve Steinbeiss, who trains with the Arizona Combat Sports team, could remain on the card although at this time no new opponent has been announced.
The co-main events for the upcoming WEC show in Florida will be a pair of title bouts as Urijah Faber puts his 145-pound divisional championship up for grabs against Mike Brown and Paulo Filho returns to action to face Chael Sonnen for the middleweight title.

The event, which will emanate from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Holly, Fla. will also featured WEC middleweight title defense by Paulo Filho against Chael Sonnen.
Other matches officially announced Wednesday by the WEC include former NCAA champion Jake Rosholt taking on American Top Team black belt Danillo Villefort, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone vs. “Razor” Rob McCullough, Rani Yayha vs. Yoshiro Maeda, Ed Ratcliff vs. Danny Castillo, Tim McKenzie vs. David Avellan, and former NCAA champion Johny Hendricks vs. Alex Serdyukov.

World Extreme Cagefighting today revealed its entire Sept. 10 fight card, which features WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (21-1) vs. challenger Mike Brown (15-4) in the night's main event.
Also on tap for the event is a middleweight championship rematch bout between title-holder Paulo Filho (16-0) and Chael Sonnen (22-9-1), and an intriguing featherweight fight between Leonard Garcia (11-3) and former top contender Jens Pulver (22-9-1).
WEC 36, which airs live on Versus, takes place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Faber, who recently scored a unanimous-decision victory over Jens Pulver in perhaps the biggest WEC event to date, picked up his fifth successful title defense since winning the WEC belt in March 2006. He also picked up his 13th consecutive win with the win. His opponent Brown, an American Top Team fighter, will go for his eighth straight victory.
Filho, who recently underwent a substance-abuse recovery program, originally met Sonnen in December. The title fight ended in controversy when Sonnen claimed he never verbally tapped from an arm-bar, though the referee claimed he did. The two fighters were then scheduled to rematch in March, but the 30-year-old Filho elected to withdraw from the event due to "personal reasons." He later shared that he was suffering from depression and chemical-dependency issues.
MMAjunkie.com ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) first reported the Garcia-Pulver bout in July when Garcia said he had agreed to the meeting with the former UFC champ. Garcia will fight for the first time since a February TKO victory over Hiroyuki Takaya. Soon after the win, the former UFC fighter was arrested for alleged involvement in a Texas-based drug ring. Garcia, who continually maintained that he was simply the victim of guilt by association, was recently cleared of all pending federal charges.
The full WEC 36 card includes:
MAIN CARD
* Champ Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown (for featherweight title)
* Champ Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen (for middleweight title)
* Leonard Garcia vs. Jens Pulver
* Jake Rosholt vs. Danillo Villefort
* Donald Cerrone vs. Rob McCullough
PRELIMINARY CARD

- AARON SIMPSON STEPS IN TO FACE AVELLAN IN WEC
Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
Less than 24 hours after MMAWeekly.com learned that David Avellan was without an opponent due to Tim McKenzie being forced out of the fight with an undisclosed injury, a new fighter has stepped in as a replacement.
Arizona Combat Sports fighter and former All-American wrestler Aaron Simpson will take the fight against Avellan on short notice, moving up from his natural 170-pound weight class.
Simpson has a storied career on the collegiate wrestling scene serving as both coach and training partner to many of the top fighters now competing in MMA while working with both Arizona State and later with the Cal-Poly wrestling team.
His resume as a coach reads like a who’s who of young MMA stars having worked with everyone from Cain Velasquez to C.B. Dollaway to Mark Munoz.
Simpson also sports an undefeated professional MMA record of his own, and along with his wife, appeared on the last season of the popular NBC show “American Gladiators.”
His opponent, David Avellan, will be no easy test to face on short notice. The Bodog Fight veteran also sports an undefeated record and holds numerous achievements in the grappling world including a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a former Abu Dhabi competitor.
The fight between Simpson and Avellan rounds out the WEC 36 card at 11 bouts for Sept. 10, including the main event pitting featherweight king Urijah Faber in defense of his title against Mike Brown.

Maeda vs Yahya is a good fight
I'm definitely looking forward to that fight. a W for Maeda may throw him back into a no 1 contender spot. I really want a rematch with torres for maeda. The first fight was great until the doctor stoppage.
Why the heck is taht fight at the bottom of the undercard? I know this is a good lineup of fights but that should be a little further up the list.
BREAKING: Faber vs. Brown Postponed Due to Hurricane
September 5, 2008
In a media release late Friday night, World Extreme Cagefighting announced that the card featuring Uriah Faber vs. Mike Brown scheduled for Wednesday, September 10 has been postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Ike to South Florida. The fight was to take place at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollwood Florida.
The fight has been rescheduled for November 5 at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
According to the release:
“Tickets purchased for the September 10th date remain valid and will be honored on the new date. Refunds for fans that are unable to attend the rescheduled date can be obtained at the point of purchase.”
In addition, a corresponding press conference to be held on September 8th at Paradise Live has been canceled.
“Due to the potential of a major hurricane hitting the South Florida area on Wednesday we were compelled to postpone the event,” said Vice President of Operations and Production Peter Dropick. “For the safety of our fans, the fighters and our staff we felt it was in the best interest to make this decision.”
Hurricane Ike is currently a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 MPH and is moving west/southwest toward South Florida according to the National Hurricane Center’s latest advisory. The storm is on track to have impact on the Florida Keys and South Florida on Tuesday (9/9) into Wednesday (9/10).

A new opponent has been secured to take on former NCAA wrestling champion Jake Rosholt in his WEC debut on Nov. 5 in Hollywood, Fla. at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Rosholt had been slated to face American Top Team jiu-jitsu black belt Danillo Villefort but will instead square off against 5-0 middleweight Nissen Osterneck.
FiveOuncesOfPain.com confirmed the news with multiple sources, including Rosholt’s manager and Team Takedown founder, Ted Ehrhardt.
Ehrhardt also confirmed to Five Ounces of Pain that Rosholt’s appearance with the WEC on Nov. 5 will be his first and last with the promotion. According to Ehrhardt, UFC Vice President of Talent Relations Joe Silva has informed Rosholt’s camp that he will be moved to the UFC’s middleweight division following his fight vs. Osterneck.
Rosholt, who was also a multi-NCAA All-American while wrestling at Oklahoma State, is 4-0 in his young martial mixed arts with all victories ending via TKO or submission.
For Osterneck, who competed on for Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights during the promotions second-ever card last December, the fight will mark his WEC debut as well. He had been scheduled to fight for the promotion previously but was scratched from the card due to injury.
WEC 36, which had been scheduled to take place in September but was postponed due to Hurricane Ike, is scheduled to be headlined Urijah Faber defending the WEC featherweight title vs. number one contender Mike Thomas Brown. Other bouts include Paulo Filho defending his WEC middleweight title vs. Chael Sonnen, Jens Pulver vs. Leonard Garcia in a highly-anticipated featherweight bout, and Donald Cerrone vs. “Razor” Rob McCullough in which the winner will be named the number one contender to the WEC lightweight title currently held by Jamie Varner.

Steve Steinbeiss' World Extreme Cagefighting debut just keeps going in circles. He was originally slated to debut against highly touted wrestler Mark Munoz at WEC 36 when it was scheduled for Sept. 10 in Hollywood, Fla. Then Munoz had to withdraw due to a knee injury.
Ultimate Fighter season 1 cast member Alex Schoenauer kept Steinbeiss on the card though, stepping in on short notice.
Then Ike stepped into the picture. The third most costly hurricane in U.S. history, Ike didn't actually cause much direct havoc in the Hollywood area, but its threat was strong enough to cause the WEC to postpone the event until Nov. 5.
The Schoenauer vs. Steinbeiss fight was kept intact for the new date... that is, up until Schoenauer suffered an injury. According to sources close to the fighter's camp, Schoenauer suffered a torn hamstring and will be unable to fight next week in Florida, once again leaving Steinbeiss wondering about his WEC debut.
With a week to go until fight night, it is unclear if a substitute will be lined up in time.
This was supposed to be one of the WEC's final 205-pound bouts, as the promotion intends to deactivate both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions following its final show this year on Dec. 3 in Las Vegas.
Gotta be frustrating for this kid.

- UFC VET CARMELO MARRERO HEADS TO WEC 36
Thursday, October 30, 2008 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com
Steve Steinbeiss may make his World Extreme Cagefighting debut before the promotion deactivates his weight class after all. Following several false starts with WEC 36 in September, Steinbeiss' bout with Alex Schoenauer, part of the rescheduled event for Nov. 5, fell through Wednesday as Schoenauer had to drop out of the bout due to a torn hamstring.
MMAWeekly.com learned on Thursday that UFC veteran Carmelo Marrero has verbally agreed to step into the bout at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
Steinbeiss, with a 4-1 professional record in tow, hasn't seen action since June of this year at a small show in Laughlin, Nev. Having cut his professional teeth as part of the short-lived Bodog Fight promotion, he has been going stir crazy waiting for his opportunity to compete in the WEC and prove himself in the UFC's sister promotion.
This fight is also a big opportunity for Marrero. He didn't last long his first go around in the UFC, garnering a 1-2 record in the Octagon. He has since won three fights (with one no contest decision) on smaller promotions, and this will be his opportunity to give UFC officials another look to see if he has progressed enough to be welcomed back into the promotion.
The WEC is shutting down its light heavyweight and middleweight divisions following its Dec. 3 effort in Las Vegas, so these last few fights in either class – Steinbeiss and Marrero being at 205 pounds – are important auditions for the fighters that hope to move into the UFC.
