Jens Pulver was recently part of a great interview done over at BigHouseBoxing where he spoke on a variety of topics including his battle with depression. Here’s the quote:

“The anxiety comes from the openness. I’m definitely no superstar or anything like that, but at the same time it’s not hard to just Google my name and know everything there is to know about me. As an athlete I spend all my time gearing up for one moment. For three months all I think about is that 15 or 25 minutes. Then you do the fight and it is such a high. If the fight works out in my favor it’s more bearable, but either way you’re sitting there going what’s next? It’s always a low after a big high. It makes life tough. With depression I don’t know how it creeps in. I’m just trying to find a calm and peace, but the reality is I can’t. When you have anxiety, you are depressed, and are dealing with panic attacks you can just never relax. Even when everything is going great you’re just sitting back waiting for the shoe to drop. You’re like when’s the bad stuff going to happen? You just keep waiting for it while life passes you by, and you never get to stop and smell the roses. Your constantly just waiting for that next battle, and it just drives you nuts.”

Pulver is slated to take on Leonard Garcia at WEC 36.

Read his book, Lil Evil, it will explain a lot about why he is why, what and who he is.

The anxiety comes from the openness. I relate to that so much. My two books have made a lot of people question the life I've had. I could care less about the people I will never see and the people who don't really know me who read my books, but the people who are family and friends and who have seen the life I have had... it scares me when they read what I have written. It scares me when they see what I thought and what I felt at the worst times in my life. The anxiety is from the openness.

Pulver is a great guy. I bumped into him at UFC 78 and he talked and was really nice. The guy then proceeded to take pictures through like 2 fights... didn't turn down a single fan.

I might have to pick up his book. I only hear good things about it.

Cool story Ramma. I wish that I had the stories that some do about meeting fighters. Pulver seems like a cool guy. I had a chance to meet him a couple years ago at a GNC near the school I went to at the time. He was nice and took pics but I wasn't able to really talk with him. I too think i'll go and pick this book up.

Yeah, just about everyone I've met by going to events on my own or covered for mmanews has been pretty cool.

All of them are really nice guys for the most part.
