This Wednesday, Leonard Garcia faces Jens Pulver at WEC 36 in the most highly-publicized fight of the former UFC fighter's young career.
A victory over "Lil' Evil" could put Garcia in line for a future title shot against the winner of the Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown featherweight title match at the same event.
Garcia recently made an appearance on MMARated Radio and talked about the importance of this fight and his recent legal troubles, but it was his thoughts on the current fighting status of a friend and former foe that proved to be most interesting.
We asked Garcia about Roger Huerta's recent contractual issues with the UFC that popped up prior to "El Matador's" fight against Kenny Florian at UFC 87. If you recall, Huerta was very vocal in expressing his displeasure with the situation and rumors of a falling out with Dana White began to spread.
“The truth is, I don’t really care if I fight in the UFC or somewhere else,” Huerta told Fight! Magazine.
Garcia will always be linked to Huerta as both men engaged in an unexpected potential fight of the year candidate at UFC 67 - ultimately won by Huerta via unanimous decision. As a result, we were curious as to whether or not he agreed with Huerta's questionable negotiating tactics.
"I think everybody writes their own ticket," Garcia said. "The only thing I can say is don't ever start to believe what people say about you. That's the number one thing for me. The simple fact of the matter is that we are getting paid to do what we love. Don't go out there and try to reach for the stars too soon.
It doesn't appear as though the UFC and Huerta have patched things up as his fight was omitted from a recent rebroadcast of UFC 87 on Spike TV.
"Any young fighters coming up, if you're listening, don't make that mistake (of talking about how unhappy you are to the media)," Garcia said. "You know who holds the cards: The people who are holding the shows, they call the shots and all you are there to do is fight.
"I don't blame Roger for doing what he did. He tried to take a bullet for everybody out as far as asking for more money and doing stuff," Garcia added. "(But) you should never talk about your boss or don't bite the hand the feed you."
Jeebus this is gonna bring some people out the woodwork if the pattern i've been seeing holds true. i think Garcia is absolutely right in what he's saying. Huerta got a big head and thought he could demand more than he is actually worth. He should just shut up while he's ahead but then again i haven't heard much from him after his UD loss to Florian.
